Yanar Dag, Baku

As I approached Yanar Dag, I was immediately struck by the surreal sight of flames dancing along the hillside. This natural wonder, located just outside Baku, Azerbaijan, is truly a spectacle to behold. The name "Yanar Dag" means "burning mountain" in Azerbaijani, and it's easy to see why. The flames, fueled by natural gas seeping from the ground, have been burning continuously for decades. The fire stretches about 10 meters along the base of the hill, creating an otherworldly atmosphere, especially at night when the flames cast an eerie glow across the landscape. Despite the intense heat, I was able to get quite close to the fire, feeling its warmth on my skin. The air was filled with the distinct smell of natural gas, reminding me of the geological forces at work beneath my feet. While there isn't much in terms of facilities at the site, the raw beauty of the eternal flames is more than enough to captivate visitors. It's a place that sparks the imagination, evoking tales of ancient fire worshippers and the mystical properties of the earth. Yanar Dag is a testament to Azerbaijan's nickname as the "Land of Fire" and offers a unique glimpse into the country's natural wonders.
