Fort George, Inverness

As I approached Fort George, I was struck by its imposing presence overlooking the Moray Firth. This massive 18th-century fortress, built after the Battle of Culloden, is an architectural marvel that has stood the test of time. Walking through the fort's gates, I felt transported back to the Georgian era. The expansive parade ground immediately caught my eye, surrounded by sturdy stone buildings that once housed soldiers and stored supplies. I was fascinated by the well-preserved artillery defenses, including the Grand Magazine and the numerous cannon emplacements along the ramparts. The views from the fort's walls are simply breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding coastline and the distant Cairngorm mountains. Inside the fort, I explored the Highlanders' Museum, which tells the captivating story of the Highland regiments. The living history demonstrations were a highlight, with costumed interpreters bringing the fort's past to life. Despite its martial purpose, I found Fort George to be a place of serene beauty, where history and nature intertwine in perfect harmony.
