Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), Berchtesgaden

Perched atop the Kehlstein mountain, the Eagle's Nest is a breathtaking architectural marvel with a dark history. As I ascended the winding road, the anticipation built. The final stretch involves a brass elevator carved into the mountain, whisking you up to the summit. Stepping out, I was immediately struck by the panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. The building itself, once Hitler's 50th birthday present, now serves as a restaurant and historical site. Inside, the atmosphere is somber yet fascinating. The original marble fireplace, a gift from Mussolini, still stands. Walking through the rooms, it's eerie to think of the meetings that once took place here. Outside, hiking trails offer stunning vistas. The juxtaposition of natural beauty and dark history is palpable. Despite its past, the Eagle's Nest now stands as a place of reflection and remembrance. The journey here, the views, and the historical significance make it a must-visit. As I left, I felt a mix of awe at the landscape and a deep appreciation for how far we've come since those dark days.
