Nestled on the banks of the Yamuna River in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Agra stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Mughal Empire. This historic city is home to one of the world's most iconic monuments, the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of eternal love. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, this white marble mausoleum attracts millions of visitors each year who come to marvel at its perfect symmetry, intricate inlay work, and the way it changes hues throughout the day, from a soft pink at sunrise to a golden glow at sunset.

Beyond the Taj Mahal, Agra offers a wealth of architectural wonders. The imposing Agra Fort, another UNESCO site, showcases the might of the Mughal dynasty with its massive red sandstone walls and palaces. Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned capital built by Emperor Akbar, lies just outside the city and provides a fascinating glimpse into 16th-century urban planning and architectural innovation.

The city's vibrant bazaars offer authentic experiences where visitors can shop for marble handicrafts, leather goods, and embroidered textiles. Agra's culinary scene delights with Mughlai cuisine, featuring rich, aromatic dishes like petha (a sweet made from ash gourd) and the famous Agra breakfast of bedai and jalebi. Best visited between October and March when the weather is pleasant, Agra can be reached easily from Delhi, just 230 kilometers away.

The city forms part of India's popular Golden Triangle tourist circuit along with Delhi and Jaipur. While many come for a day trip to see the Taj Mahal, spending a few days allows travelers to explore the city's lesser-known gems like Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb (often called the "Baby Taj") and Mehtab Bagh, a garden complex offering stunning views of the Taj Mahal across the river, especially at sunset.
