Skukuza's rich history dates back to 1902 when it was established as a ranger post. It was named after James Stevenson-Hamilton, the park's first warden, whom local people called "Skukuza" meaning "he who sweeps clean" in Tsonga, referring to his efforts to clear the area of poachers.

The best time to visit is during the dry winter months (May to September) when vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot around water sources. However, the summer months bring lush landscapes and newborn animals, offering a different but equally rewarding safari experience.
