Perched atop a hill in the heart of Quito, El Panecillo is a must-visit landmark that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. As I climbed the winding road to the summit, I was struck by the imposing 100-foot-tall aluminum statue of the Virgin of Quito, her wings spread wide as if embracing the entire city below. The statue's base houses a small museum where I learned about its construction and symbolism. The real highlight, though, is the 360-degree vista of Quito's historic center and the surrounding volcanoes. On a clear day, you can even spot the snow-capped peak of Cotopaxi in the distance. The hill itself, shaped like a small loaf of bread (hence its name, which means "little bread" in Spanish), is steeped in history, once serving as an important Incan temple site. Don't forget to sample some of the local street food from vendors at the base – the empanadas are particularly delicious. While the climb can be steep, the reward at the top is well worth the effort, offering a unique perspective on Quito's blend of colonial and modern architecture.
