Nestled in the Andes Mountains of southwestern Colombia, Pasto is a vibrant city that offers travelers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and authentic Colombian experiences. Pasto is perhaps most famous for its spectacular Blacks and Whites' Carnival (Carnaval de Negros y Blancos), a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage celebration held annually in early January. During this festive time, the city transforms with elaborate parades featuring massive, meticulously crafted paper-mâché figures, traditional music, dancing, and the playful custom of painting each other with cosmetic powder.

The surrounding region offers breathtaking natural attractions, including Laguna de la Cocha, a beautiful high-altitude lake just 45 minutes from the city. Here, visitors can explore the tiny island of La Corota, a nature reserve with unique Andean flora, or enjoy boat rides and sample fresh trout at lakeside restaurants. Pasto is also renowned for its exceptional handicrafts, particularly its distinctive barniz de Pasto (Pasto varnish) technique—an indigenous art form using natural resins to create intricate, colorful designs on wooden objects.
